McGraw Hill launches $50,000 #education4empowerment scholarship for California’s incarcerated juvenile firefighters
The contest will be exclusively open to the incarcerated youth firefighters who responded to the 2025 LA wildfires
NEW YORK, New York (February 24, 2025) - McGraw Hill announces a new essay scholarship contest to support California’s incarcerated juvenile firefighters, offering a $50,000 educational scholarship to the first place winner. Submissions will be accepted on the publisher’s website from March 1 to April 1.
“The team at McGraw Hill and I were deeply impressed by the work these young firefighters are doing,” said CEO of McGraw Hill, Simon Allen. “We are excited to provide them with an opportunity for a more affordable college education and a platform to share their story.”
McGraw Hill will also award $10,000 each to the second and third place winners. The contest’s theme is “resilience”, with participants encouraged to reflect on what their experience on the frontlines of California’s wildfires taught them. Full essay requirements and guidelines will be available on McGraw Hill’s website.
The publisher will review the submissions and announce the winner on April 14 through Instagram. The winning essay, along with the runners-up’s essays will be available on the publisher’s website the same day.
“At McGraw Hill, we believe education transforms lives,” said Michael Ryan, president of McGraw Hill's higher education department. “We can’t wait to see what opportunities the future brings to these young individuals.”
McGraw Hill will interview the essay contest winner and runners-up for the company’s educational podcast shortly after the winners are announced. The publisher hopes the firefighters’ stories will inspire individuals everywhere to persevere through adversity.
